SHINE uses 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material, powered by advanced retroreflective technology designed specifically for nighttime visibility and pedestrian safety. Unlike regular reflective or light-coloured fabrics that scatter light, retroreflective material returns light directly back to its source (like vehicle headlights). That means when a driver’s lights hit you, the material shines brilliantly back at them, creating sharp contrast against dark surroundings. This isn’t glow-in-the-dark. It’s high-visibility safety technology used in road signage and professional safety gear, reimagined as wearable design.
Research shows reflective material placed on moving joints — ankles, wrists, knees — is most effective. It highlights human movement (called biomotion), instantly signaling to drivers: That’s a person. Under high-beam headlights, you can be visible from over 150-200 meters (approximately 500 feet away). That extra distance gives drivers critical reaction time, potentially up to 10 seconds instead of just a 2. More visibility. More awareness. More time. Even though far less driving happens after dark, 50% of traffic deaths in Canada occur at night. Pedestrian fatalities are significantly higher in low-light conditions, and visibility is a major factor.
- Approximately 26% of pedestrian fatalities in Canada occur at night, with some data indicating up to 60% happen in low-light conditions.
- Around 21% of nighttime pedestrian fatalities involved dark clothing.
- After the fall Daylight Saving Time shift, pedestrian injury rates increase by 19% between 5 pm and 8 pm.
- In British Columbia, over 30% of pedestrian accidents and fatalities occur during November and December, when darkness comes earlier.
But here’s the powerful part:
Wearing retroreflective material can increase visibility distance from roughly 25–30 metres to up to 200 metres.
That gives drivers up to 10 seconds to react instead of 2.
The Canada Safety Council recommends retroreflective gear (which bounces light back to the source) over light-coloured clothing alone — especially at dawn, dusk, and night.
